Revision Hip Replacement
What Is Revision Hip Replacement?
Hip replacement is one of the most successful operations in all of medicine.
For most patients, a hip replacement provides years—or even decades—of excellent function.
Many patients eventually reach a point where they forget they even have an artificial hip.
Unfortunately, an implant may not last forever, and no surgery is immune to complications.
When a previously replaced hip develops a problem that requires additional surgery, the procedure is called a revision hip replacement.
Revision surgery can range from relatively straightforward procedures involving the exchange of a single component to highly complex reconstructions requiring specialized implants, bone grafting, and advanced surgical techniques.
A loose implant, an infection, recurrent dislocation, and a worn-out plastic liner are all very different problems that require very different solutions.
The first step is always determining exactly why the hip replacement is no longer functioning properly.
